WATER SCARCITY HITS UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI HOTELS
A severe water shortage has hit the male hostels at the University of Maiduguri, forcing students to gather in large numbers around the limited available water points.
The situation, captured on Saturday morning, shows dozens of students struggling to fetch water from a single tap within the hostel premises. Many were seen with buckets, kettles, and other containers, forming long queues under the scorching sun in an attempt to secure water for their daily needs.
Several students who spoke with our correspondent expressed frustration over the recurring water problem, stating that it has disrupted their daily routines, including cooking, bathing, and washing. “We wake up as early as 4:00 a.m. just to queue for water, and sometimes, we still don’t get enough before lectures begin,” one student lamented.
Efforts to get a response from the university’s maintenance department were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. However, some hostel officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the water scarcity was due to ongoing maintenance of the main water tanks serving the hostel blocks.
Students are calling on the university management to act swiftly and provide a sustainable solution to the water crisis before it escalates further.
